I still haven't made up my mind about fair value accounting, but it does seem strange to think that fair value accounting blocks the way to needed reform. If you believe that fair value accounting led to problems under the previous regulatory scheme, and you are a regulator, why not just change your regulatory scheme?

Reminds the whole "forbearance" scheme the bank regulators used in the 1980's that later became the "S&L debacle."
